{"id":1088,"date":"2005-10-18T09:52:00","date_gmt":"2005-10-18T13:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markbaker.ca\/wp\/2005\/10\/18\/death-by-indecision\/"},"modified":"2005-10-18T09:52:00","modified_gmt":"2005-10-18T13:52:00","slug":"death-by-indecision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.markbaker.ca\/blog\/2005\/10\/death-by-indecision\/","title":{"rendered":"Death by indecision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dave Orchard posted a pretty well argued\n<a href=\"http:\/\/lists.w3.org\/Archives\/Public\/www-tag\/2005Oct\/0025.html\">treatise<\/a>\non what is, essentially, a defense of the right for Web services to not adopt the\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ics.uci.edu\/~fielding\/pubs\/dissertation\/rest_arch_style.htm#sec_5_1_3\">stateless interaction<\/a>\nand more importantly, the\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ics.uci.edu\/~fielding\/pubs\/dissertation\/rest_arch_style.htm#sec_5_1_5\">resource identification<\/a>\nconstraints which are so important to the Web.<\/p>\n\n<p>As I explained in my\n<a href=\"http:\/\/lists.w3.org\/Archives\/Public\/www-tag\/2005Oct\/0030.html\">response<\/a>,\nif Dave was arguing that <em>Joe Architect<\/em> should have the right to\nnot follow these constraints (which of course, he already does), he&#8217;d have my\nfull support, since in the <em>small<\/em>, that is often necessary.<\/p>\n\n<p>However, in the <em>large<\/em> &#8211; when taking into account the value of\nparticipating in the information space that is the Web, and of leveraging\nrather than fighting its network effects &#8211; I cannot support him in his\nattempts to standardize\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artima.com\/intv\/distrib4.html\">known bad practice<\/a>,\neven for non-Web systems.<\/p>\n\n<p>I won&#8217;t bore you with yet another drawn-out description of &#8220;why&#8221;, since\nI think I&#8217;ve made that clear in the past; the Web is what Web services are\ntrying to be, so why fight it?<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Dave Orchard posted a pretty well argued treatise on what is, essentially, a defense of the right for Web services to not adopt the stateless interaction and more importantly, the resource identification constraints which are so important to the Web.
