{"id":1182,"date":"2005-12-07T15:01:00","date_gmt":"2005-12-07T19:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markbaker.ca\/wp\/2005\/12\/07\/poker-messaging\/"},"modified":"2005-12-07T15:01:00","modified_gmt":"2005-12-07T19:01:00","slug":"poker-messaging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.markbaker.ca\/blog\/2005\/12\/poker-messaging\/","title":{"rendered":"Poker messaging"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An\n<a href=\"http:\/\/techdirt.com\/articles\/20051207\/1113225_F.shtml\">interesting story<\/a>\nabout a guy who lost a lot of money because his DSL went down during an online poker\ngame (due to a gunfight?!), and his &#8220;All in&#8221; message, sent while sitting on\n<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Texas_hold_'em_hands#Pocket_Aces_.28A.E2.99.A0A.E2.99.A3.29\">pocket aces<\/a>, ended up not taking effect until a later game;<\/p>\n\n<p>In discussing who to blame though, Mike Masnick of\n<a href=\"http:\/\/techdirt.com\">Techdirt<\/a> suggested;<\/p>\n\n<blockquote>\nThe guy, needless to say, is a bit pissed off. He wants to blame someone, but Qwest, the DSL provider isn&#8217;t taking responsibility (can you believe them?). The online poker site also said too bad. Obviously, he&#8217;s going after the wrong people. The person to blame is the &#8220;random&#8221; shooter who took out DSL in New Mexico.\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>It seems to me that this is a design flaw with the poker room software; that the\nmessages sent from the client aren&#8217;t sufficiently self-descriptive.  If the messages\nincluded an embedded &#8220;hand id&#8221;, identifying the particular hand of poker being\nplayed, then there&#8217;d be no problem as delayed messages would be ignored.
