{"id":160,"date":"2003-08-24T02:00:00","date_gmt":"2003-08-24T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markbaker.ca\/wp\/?p=153"},"modified":"2003-08-24T02:00:00","modified_gmt":"2003-08-24T06:00:00","slug":"media-type-registration-decentralization-and-rdf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.markbaker.ca\/blog\/2003\/08\/media-type-registration-decentralization-and-rdf\/","title":{"rendered":"Media type registration, decentralization, and RDF"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mark Nottingham suggests the W3C should take it upon themselves to\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnot.net\/blog\/archives\/000145.html#000145\">clean up the media type registration process<\/a>.\nI sort of concur, in that the official\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ietf.org\/rfc\/rfc2048.txt\">registration procedure<\/a>\ndoesn&#8217;t explain in\nsufficient detail how the burden of managing the timeline is entirely\nregistrant-driven.  This caused lots of delay during the\nregistration of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ietf.org\/rfc\/rfc3236.txt\">RFC 3236<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>But on the other hand, I like it when centralized registries are\ndifficult to use.  If there&#8217;s really a need for a bazillion different\ndata formats, then a centralized registry is the wrong approach, and\nthe difficulty of using it &#8211; multipled by the number of people experiencing\nit &#8211; should provide sufficient impetus for somebody to suggest a change to\na decentralized process.<\/p>\n\n<p>Of course, I don&#8217;t believe we need a bazillion different data formats.\nI think we have a perfectly good\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/rdf-syntax-grammar\/\">80% solution<\/a>,\nwhich is why I&#8217;m not spearheading any efforts in this direction &#8211; though\nI think it would still be <em>useful<\/em> (just not <em>required<\/em>) to\ndecentralize media types.<\/p>\n\n<p>P.S. here&#8217;s an amusing data point, where Roy\n<a href=\"http:\/\/lists.w3.org\/Archives\/Public\/www-tag\/2003Jul\/0062.html\">takes the W3C to task<\/a>\nover its inability to properly register media types.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Mark Nottingham suggests the W3C should take it upon themselves to clean up the media type registration process.
