Boy,\nwhat a mess.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/saladwithsteve.com\/2003_08_01_archive_index.html#b106049914798275598\">Earlier this summer it seems<\/a>, the WG decided to go with a Microsoft\nlead approach to multicast name resolution, called\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ietf.org\/internet-drafts\/draft-ietf-dnsext-mdns-22.txt\">LLMNR<\/a>.\nThis was in constrast to Apple&#8217;s similar and <em>existing<\/em>\nwork on Rendezvous, which they published in both\n<a href=\"http:\/\/files.multicastdns.org\/draft-cheshire-dnsext-multicastdns.txt\">spec<\/a> and\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensource.apple.com\/projects\/rendezvous\">code<\/a> form.<\/p>\n\n<p>So rather than start from a solution that works, with\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.swampwolf.com\/products\/\">multiple<\/a>\nindependent open source\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.strangeberry.com\/java_rendevous.htm\">implementations<\/a>\navailable, they&#8217;re starting from scratch with something new and unproven?\nBrilliant!<\/p>\n\n<p>Oh, and there&#8217;s also the issue that the applications area seems to\nbe sitting on their duffs over the kind of transparency that LLMNR is\nforcing upon them by hiding the fact that the name resolution was\nperformed via local multicast rather than via DNS-proper.  Keith Moore\nseems to be the only well known &#8220;apps&#8221; person\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www1.ietf.org\/mail-archive\/working-groups\/discuss\/current\/msg00048.html\">raising any objections<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Update; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuartcheshire.org\/\">Stuart Cheshire<\/a>, main\nApple guy on this stuff, just\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ops.ietf.org\/lists\/namedroppers\/namedroppers.2003\/msg01571.html\">posted his review<\/a>\nof the last call working draft of LLMNR last night.
