{"id":173,"date":"2003-09-23T06:44:00","date_gmt":"2003-09-23T10:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markbaker.ca\/wp\/?p=140"},"modified":"2003-09-23T06:44:00","modified_gmt":"2003-09-23T10:44:00","slug":"more-rest-analogies-from-sean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.markbaker.ca\/blog\/2003\/09\/more-rest-analogies-from-sean\/","title":{"rendered":"More REST analogies from Sean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sigh, I wish I could churn out well written analogies like Sean does.\nThis time, it&#8217;s\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.propylon.com\/news\/ctoarticles\/030916_soft.html\">RS-232 and HTTP<\/a>.\nUnfortunately, I don&#8217;t think this one will register with many Web\nservices folks for one simple reason (that I&#8217;ve\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.markbaker.ca\/2002\/09\/Blog\/2003\/05\/29#2003-05-t-is-for\">talked about before<\/a>);\nthe more general the interface, the harder it is to distinguish trans<em>port<\/em>\nfrom trans<em>fer<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n<p>I expect that he&#8217;ll get feedback saying that SOAP is more like RS-232 than HTTP.<\/p>\n\n<p>Maybe HTTP should have been called &#8220;DTP&#8221;, the Data Transfer Protocol.<\/p>\n\n<p><em><strong>Update;<\/strong><\/em> oops, well so much for that theory.  The\n<a href=\"http:\/\/groups.yahoo.com\/group\/service-orientated-architecture\/message\/685\">first comment<\/a>\nI&#8217;ve seen on the article nailed it.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Sigh, I wish I could churn out well written analogies like Sean does.
