{"id":1904,"date":"2007-02-04T23:00:26","date_gmt":"2007-02-05T03:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markbaker.ca\/blog\/2007\/02\/04\/doing-my-part\/"},"modified":"2007-02-04T23:00:26","modified_gmt":"2007-02-05T03:00:26","slug":"doing-my-part","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.markbaker.ca\/blog\/2007\/02\/doing-my-part\/","title":{"rendered":"Doing my part"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I thought I&#8217;d do what little I could to help <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allthingsdistributed.com\/2007\/01\/jim_gray_missing_at_sea.html\">find Jim Gray<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mturk.com\/mturk\/preview?groupId=J0XZ58STDWJZ5QY4F9M0\">looking through some satellite pictures<\/a> for Tenacious, Jim&#8217;s boat.<\/p>\n\n<p>Dang, that&#8217;s not easy.  Here&#8217;s a typical image that I was presented;<\/p>\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.markbaker.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/02\/gray-sat.jpg\" alt=\"Sample satellite image used in the hunt for Jim Gray\" \/>\n\n<p>I did a dozen or so of them, and only a couple were a clear &#8220;No&#8221; (no ship or ship-debris-like object present).  Two or three more were so noisy as to make the job impossible, so I &#8220;returned&#8221; them.  The others involved more time than you&#8217;d expect, and a lot of squinting.<\/p>\n\n<p>A technique that I found useful was to tilt my laptop display backwards which seemed to perform a low-pass filter of sorts, reducing noise and making it easier to identify objects.  Maybe that would work for you too.  My display is TFT.<\/p>\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a tough job, but I&#8217;m happy to help.<\/p>\n\n<p><em>Update<\/em>; the images are a <em>lot<\/em> clearer today.
