{"id":280,"date":"2004-02-17T07:39:00","date_gmt":"2004-02-17T11:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markbaker.ca\/wp\/?p=276"},"modified":"2004-02-17T07:39:00","modified_gmt":"2004-02-17T11:39:00","slug":"architectural-property-of-the-day-reusability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.markbaker.ca\/blog\/2004\/02\/architectural-property-of-the-day-reusability\/","title":{"rendered":"Architectural property of the day; reusability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As long time readers of mine know, I&#8217;ve talked a lot about the value of\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ics.uci.edu\/~fielding\/pubs\/dissertation\/net_app_arch.htm#sec_2_3_5\">visibility<\/a>,\nbut had\n<a href=\"http:\/\/lists.w3.org\/Archives\/Public\/www-ws-arch\/2003May\/0136.html\">little success<\/a>\nconvincing Web services proponents that WS\/SOA has significantly less of it than do Internet\nscale architectural styles.<\/p>\n\n<p>With that in mind, I thought I&#8217;d talk a bit about a couple of related properties\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ics.uci.edu\/~fielding\/pubs\/dissertation\/net_app_arch.htm#sec_2_3_4_5\">reusability<\/a>\n(sometimes called\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=substitutability+components\">&#8220;substitutability&#8221;<\/a> when\nrelating to components),\nand\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ics.uci.edu\/~fielding\/pubs\/dissertation\/net_app_arch.htm#sec_2_3_4_4\">configurability<\/a>.\nCombined, these properties refer to the ability to swap components in and out at runtime,\nas you can with the Web (your browser can request data from any Web server), or with\n<a href=\"http:\/\/lists.w3.org\/Archives\/Public\/xml-dist-app\/2003Jan\/0018.html\">pipe and filter<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>I wonder, are there any Web services proponents who&#8217;d claim that this\nisn&#8217;t much more loosely coupled than with the unconstrained-interface SOA approach?<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"As long time readers of mine know, I&#8217;ve talked a lot about the value of visibility, but had little success convincing Web services proponents that WS\/SOA has significantly less of it than do Internet scale architectural styles.
