It had been tempermental for\na couple of years, but not so much so that I had to consider replacing it.\nIts original replacement as my desktop machine a few years ago &#8211;\na smokin&#8217; 128 (count &#8217;em!) megabyte PII-400 &#8211; once again performs\nreplacement duties.<\/p>\n\n<p>I also took the opportunity to switch distributions.  I started out\nwith\n<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yggdrasil_Linux\">Yggdrasil<\/a>\nback in 1994 (IIRC), switched to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redhat.com\">Redhat<\/a>\nin &#8217;97, and now have gone with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.debian.org\">Debian<\/a>\nafter a lot of other developer types recommended it.<\/p>\n\n<p>Except for some really odd behaviour with a\n<a href=\"http:\/\/bugs.debian.org\/cgi-bin\/bugreport.cgi?bug=199653\">bad bash<\/a>,\nand some corrupted binaries (a bad \/bin\/mount makes rebooting kinda hard) which\nrequired a re-install, it&#8217;s looking nice.\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.debian.org\/doc\/manuals\/apt-howto\/\">apt<\/a>\nis sweet, and it makes me wonder why I ever felt the need to fork over money for\n<a href=\"https:\/\/rhn.redhat.com\/\">rhn<\/a>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Ah, that&#8217;s better.
