The\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/features\/talent\/showContent.jsp?content=20030625_170622_1300\">announcer<\/a>,\nnormally a knowledgeable guy, called this a &#8220;ground rule double&#8221;, as would,\nI think, most announcers.<\/p>\n\n<p>Now the thing is, any rule which is uniformly applied, is by\n<a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.mlb.com\/NASApp\/mlb\/mlb\/official_info\/umpires\/ground_rules.jsp\">definition<\/a>,\n<em>not<\/em> a ground rule, since ground rules are, well, specific to a grounds.\nSo in fact, that wasn&#8217;t a ground rule double, it was simply a double, or an\n&#8220;automatic double&#8221; if you prefer.<\/p>\n\n<p>Apparently large scale distributed systems isn&#8217;t the only context in\nwhich the extent of the applicability of\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ics.uci.edu\/~fielding\/pubs\/dissertation\/rest_arch_style.htm#sec_5_1_5\">uniformity<\/a>\nisn&#8217;t fully appreciated. 8-)<\/p>\n\n<p><em>Update<\/em>; ah, yes, Rob Neyer, as usual,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/mlb\/columns\/story?columnist=neyer_rob&amp;id=1794568\">nails it<\/a>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"I&#8217;m just watching the Jays beat up on the Mariners on the tube, catching up on email.
