{"id":869,"date":"2005-07-18T16:16:00","date_gmt":"2005-07-18T20:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markbaker.ca\/wp\/2005\/07\/18\/the-state-of-the-browser\/"},"modified":"2005-07-18T16:16:00","modified_gmt":"2005-07-18T20:16:00","slug":"the-state-of-the-browser","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.markbaker.ca\/blog\/2005\/07\/the-state-of-the-browser\/","title":{"rendered":"The state of the browser"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Not browsers in general, <em>my<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/products\/firefox\/\">browser<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s see what I&#8217;ve got going right now that distinguishes my<br \/>\nbrowsing experience from yours;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>my bookmarks<\/li>\n<li>my preferences<\/li>\n<li>my <a href=\"about:config\">config params<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/greasemonkey.mozdev.org\/\">Greasemonkey<\/a> and assorted scripts<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/platypus.mozdev.org\/\">Platypus<\/a> and assorted &#8220;scripts&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>my form <a href=\"http:\/\/ifindkarma.typepad.com\/relax\/2005\/01\/life_in_a_texta.html\">textareas<\/a><\/li>\n<li>my plugins<\/li>\n<li>my currently open windows and tabs<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/chrispederick.com\/work\/firefox\/webdeveloper\/\">Web developer<\/a> and its settings<\/li>\n<li>cache<\/li>\n<li>history<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;m certainly forgetting others.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a big pain in my arse when I update something on my laptop, and then have to remember to replicate it on my PC at home.  <em>Big<\/em> pain.  I think the time is right to stuff a micro Web server into the browser to make all this data available via http URLs, so that I can point another copy of Firefox at it and have my experience cloned.  Ok, maybe not the cache or history, but you get the point.<\/p>\n<p>And while we&#8217;re at it, maybe we can find some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.markbaker.ca\/2002\/09\/Blog\/2002\/10\/17#2002-10-ng-browsers\">other uses<\/a> for the embedded server.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Not browsers in general, my browser.
