(Unanimously, they&#8217;d all give up the latter without a blink.)\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>No surprise there,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.markbaker.ca\/2002\/09\/Blog\/2003\/10\/31#2003-10-avalon\">except perhaps to Microsoft<\/a>\n(though I&#8217;ll have more to say on that soon, after the W3C makes a certain\n<a href=\"http:\/\/listserver.dreamhost.com\/pipermail\/whatwg-whatwg.org\/2005-September\/004791.html\">much-delayed announcement<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n<p>Tim Bray\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tbray.org\/ongoing\/When\/200x\/2005\/10\/03\/Browser-or-Everything\">picks up on it<\/a>\nand observes;<\/p>\n\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/www.tbray.org\/ongoing\/When\/200x\/2005\/10\/03\/Browser-or-Everything\">\nFrom right now in 2005, I see three families of desktop apps that are here for the long haul: First the browser itself, including variations like news readers and music finders, whether P2P or centralized. Second, realtime human-to-human communication, spanning the spectrum from text to voice to video. Third, content creation: PhotoShop, Excel, DreamWeaver, and whatever we&#8217;ll need for what we&#8217;re creating tomorrow.\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>That&#8217;s a reasonable list of apps, but I don&#8217;t know how &#8220;long haul&#8221; Tim might be\nthinking there.  &#8220;Excel&#8221; specifically, seems like something that&#8217;s ripe for an\nAJAX equivalent, something Jot&#8217;s been\n<a href=\"http:\/\/query.jot.com\/csvdoc\/\">working on<\/a>\n(amoungst\n<a href=\"http:\/\/numsum.com\/\">others<\/a>).\nAlso, the human-to-human stuff, while it has most certainly been handled primarily\n<em>outside<\/em> the browser to date, I see no reason why much of it couldn&#8217;t be\nhandled in-browser, as the recent flurry of\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unwieldy.net\/ajaxim\/\">AJAXian IM solutions<\/a>\nsuggests.<\/p>\n\n<p>Plus, lest one think that even those desktop apps that <em>are<\/em> around for the\nlong haul aren&#8217;t affected by the Web, consider that most of them &#8211; Photoshop, etc.. &#8211;\nare, at the very least, destined for use as browser plugins.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"I loved this bit from Schwartz&#8217;s latest; Or finally, as I did last week at a keynote, ask the audience which they&#8217;d rather give up &#8211; their browser, or all the rest of their desktop apps.
